Reading the five elements (wu-xing)

The five elements (五行, wǔ xíng) — wood, fire, earth, metal, water — are how Bazi groups the eight characters of the chart. Each character belongs to exactly one element. The tally is a count, not a score.

How BaziTrace counts

Each pillar contributes two characters: the heavenly stem on top and the earthly branch on the bottom. We count one occurrence per character, so the total is always 8 with all four pillars, or 6 when the birth time is unknown. Hidden stems inside branches are deliberately not counted.

The total is split across five categories, so a category can land on 0 — for example, a chart whose visible stems and branches are all fire and water will show Wood 0. The 0 is a real number, not a missing value: it means none of the visible characters on this particular chart mapped to that element.

The method is fixed and visible in the engine source (src/lib/bazi.ts) and on the methodology page. There is no hidden weighting or scoring step.

What the tally tells you

• How many of the eight visible characters map to each element. The tally is a frequency count of the stems and branches on the chart. The same element category can appear anywhere from 0 to 8 times.
• Which element appears most often. That is the starting observation. When two or three elements tie for the highest count, we report the tie rather than picking one.
• How the day-master element appears, relative to the others. The number next to the day-master element is just another frequency count in the same five-element tally. It is the same kind of number as the others, not a strength score.

What the tally does not tell you

• A 0 is possible and does not mean you “lack” that element. With only 6 or 8 visible characters spread across five categories, a category can easily land on zero. That is just what the count says — that none of the visible stems or branches on this particular chart mapped to that element. It is not a diagnosis, a weakness, or a sign that something needs to be fixed or balanced out.
• It is a frequency count, not a strength or personality score. “Wood 3, Water 2” means three visible characters on the chart are tagged Wood and two are tagged Water. It does not mean a person is “three parts Wood” or “more Wood than Water” in any psychological or trait-based sense.
• It does not recommend food, colors, or careers. Those recommendations are common on the internet. They are not part of what the BaziTrace engine publishes.
• It does not score you. There is no “good” or “bad” distribution. The count is reported as-is.

How to read it on your chart

1. Notice which element is at the top of the tally. That is your most-present element.
2. Notice whether your day-master element appears more or less often than the others. That gives you a starting observation about the chart.
3. Stop there. Do not translate the count into a personality claim, a remedy, or a decision.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the total 6 when the time is unknown?

Each pillar contributes two characters (stem and branch). Without the hour pillar, the chart has three pillars, so the total drops from 8 to 6.

Why are hidden stems not counted?

BaziTrace uses the visible stem and branch only. Counting the hidden stems inside each branch would change the totals by a non-trivial amount and would not match the reference library. The boundary is documented in the engine.
