Without a birth time

Bazi calculator without a birth time

Many people do not know their exact birth time. Adoption records, lost family notes, and births at home are common reasons. This page explains what you can and cannot read from a three-pillar chart, and what we do (and do not) do about it.

Try it. Tick “I do not know the birth time” on the home calculator and submit a date. The chart renders with three pillars, the Day Master, the Five Elements tally, and the Ten Gods / Hidden Stems labels for each remaining pillar.
What we do not do. We do not invent a time. We do not guess “noon” or “the middle of the day” to fill the hour pillar. A fake hour pillar is worse than no hour pillar, because it looks complete and is wrong.

What the chart looks like

With an unknown time, only three pillars render: year, month, and day. The hour cell is left blank with a short note explaining why.

Example: three-pillar chart

Birth date: 1988-11-22, time unknown.

Pillars. See visible text for full content.
Year戊辰wù-chénEarth · yang stem / Earth · yang branchEarth
Month癸亥guǐ-hàiWater · yin stem / Water · yin branchWater
Day辛巳xīn-sìMetal · yin stem / Fire · yin branchMetal
Wood0 / 6
Fire1 / 6
Earth2 / 6
Metal1 / 6
Water2 / 6

How this is counted. With an unknown time, the tally covers six characters (year, month, day — stems and branches). Total is always 6 in this mode. Each pillar contributes two characters: the heavenly stem on top and the earthly branch on the bottom. We count one occurrence for each character, so the total is always 8 (with hour) or 6 (without hour). Hidden stems inside branches are not counted.

What still works on a three-pillar chart

The engine is the same one that powers the four-pillar chart. With three pillars it still computes the Day Master, the visible Five Elements tally, the Ten Gods label for each visible stem, and the fixed Hidden Stems map for every branch that remains. These are derived from the day pillar and the year / month branches — not from any hour information — so they are computed deterministically from the date you supply. The example above is rendered live from the same code path you would see on the result page.

Structure, not destiny

Ten gods (十神) and hidden stems (藏干)

Each visible stem is labelled by its relationship to the day master. The hidden stems inside each earthly branch are listed from the main layer down. These are structural labels — they describe the chart, not the person.

Structural labels, not destiny claims.
  1. Year pillar
戊yang Earth stem → Direct seal (正印)
Hidden stems in this branch (3)
    • 戊yang Earth · main → Direct seal (正印)
    • 乙yin Wood · secondary → Indirect wealth (偏财)
    • 癸yin Water · residual → Eating god (食神)
  2. Month pillar
癸yin Water stem → Eating god (食神)
Hidden stems in this branch (2)
    • 壬yang Water · main → Hurting officer (伤官)
    • 甲yang Wood · secondary → Direct wealth (正财)
  3. Day pillar
辛yin Metal stem → Companion (比肩)
Hidden stems in this branch (3)
    • 丙yang Fire · main → Direct officer (正官)
    • 戊yang Earth · secondary → Direct seal (正印)
    • 庚yang Metal · residual → Rob wealth (劫财)

The ten-god label for a stem comes from the five-element cycle and its yin/yang match with the day master. Hidden stems come from a fixed, documented table; the engine never invents them.

What is harder without a time

  • Any reading that depends on the hour pillar. In traditional Bazi the hour pillar carries a lot of detail, including the “later life” or “children” palace. None of that is available here.
  • Some “useful god” / “favorable element” judgments. These need all four pillars to be done seriously. This calculator does not publish them.
  • Confidence in the day pillar near midnight. If a person was born at 23:30 on a Tuesday, the civil day is Tuesday but the Bazi day may be Wednesday by some conventions. This calculator uses the civil-day convention; see the methodology page for the full boundary note.

Frequently asked questions

Can Bazi be calculated without the birth time?
Yes — three of the four pillars (year, month and day) come from the date alone. The hour pillar is omitted, but the Day Master, Five Elements, Ten Gods and Hidden Stems are still derived from the three pillars that remain. Treat the result as illustrative, not as a complete chart.
What is missing from a Bazi chart without the birth time?
The hour pillar, and any reading that depends on it (the later-life or children palace in traditional reading, and most luck-pillar work). The Day Master is derived from the civil date you supply; if the actual birth is close to a date boundary, or the date / timezone conversion itself is uncertain, the day pillar and Day Master can also change. The Five Elements tally covers six characters instead of eight, but the relative shape is still meaningful.
Will you guess or invent the birth time?
No. We do not assume noon or the middle of the day. A fake hour pillar is worse than no hour pillar because it looks complete and is wrong. Tick the “I do not know the birth time” checkbox on the home calculator and the hour pillar is left blank with a short note explaining why.
What if the birth was near midnight?
If a person was born at 23:30 on a Tuesday, the civil day is Tuesday but the Bazi day may be Wednesday under some conventions. BaziTrace uses the civil-day convention (lunar-typescript sect 2: 23:00–23:59 stays on the current civil date). Read more on the methodology page.

How to get a more useful chart

  1. Check your birth certificate first. Many countries record the time of birth to the minute.
  2. Ask a family member who was there. A relative's memory is usually better than nothing, even if the minutes are fuzzy.
  3. If the time is truly lost, accept the three-pillar chart. It still gives you a day master, a five-element tally, and the Ten Gods / Hidden Stems map for the three pillars you do have. That is enough to learn the vocabulary.
  4. Do not pay for a “rectified” time before you have a real baseline. Time rectification is a paid service some readers offer, and the field is not standardised. BaziTrace does not provide or endorse this service.
